This is how KPLC charges for Electricity Units

You may have noticed that there is a difference in the number of electricity units you get from time to time. This leaves you wondering how much does KPLC charge per unit.

Look at the illustration below of how a customer is charged for units in four purchases in the same month.

First Purchase

Let’s assume the first purchase was made on January 1 2017 and the customer spends sh. 500;

Total units for this first purchase of sh. 5oo are 32.3 units.

The first purchase is the only time in a month you pay the fixed charge. Since the units you are buying will be less than 50 you will be charged sh. 2.50 per unit.

Second Purchase

Let’s assume the second purchase was made on January 6 2017and the customer spends sh. 500;

Total units for this second purchase of sh. 5oo are 31.3 units.

You don’t pay the fixed charge for this second purchase. You get less units that the first purchase because you have crossed the 50 tier mark into the 51-1500 units tier. The 17.7 units below the 50 tier are charged sh. 2.50 per unit while the other 13.6 units above the 50 mark are charged sh. 13.68 per unit.

Third Purchase

Let’s assume the third purchase was made on January 10 2017and the customer spends sh. 500;

There it’s no fixed charge since its still within the same month. The units are less than the second purchase since you have now fully moved into the 51-1500 units tier and all the units are purchased at sh. 13.68 per unit.

Fourth Purchase

Let’s assume the fourth purchase was made on January 15 2017and the customer spends sh. 500;

Total units for this fourth purchase of sh. 5oo are 21.2 units.

There are no fixed charges in this fourth purchase since its still within the same month. The units are the same as those of the third purchase since they fall in in the 51-1500 tier which and are charged at sh. 13.68 per unit.

NB: The more power you consume the more expensive it becomes to purchase.

There are some charges that may change monthly;

  1. Fuel Charge Cost- This is charged per kW/hr. It constitutes the cost KPLC incurs in generating electricity the past month.
  2. FOREX- This comes about due to the inflation of the other major currencies against the shilling in relation to costs incurred in power generation.
  • WARMA levy- This is a variable cost per KW/hr. it may also change monthly and is affected by energy supplied from hydropower plants.
